The press conference of 'The Design Competition On The Beijing 2008 Olympic Numismatic Program' was held in Oct. 28th 2003 in Diaoyutai Hotel, Beijing. Li Ruogu, the deputy governor of the PBC. attended the conference and delivered an important speech. In his speech, Li Ruogu emphasized that the commemorative coins for the XXIX Games of Olympiad is an important opportunity as well as a test to the level of China's issuance work of commemorative coins. The PBC. will advance with the times, and make constant explorations, endeavored to do a good job in the design, minting, and issuance works of the commemorative coins for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. The conference was hosted by Ye Yingnan, director general of the Currency and Bullion Bureau of the PBC.. Li Shuangxiang, deputy director of the Currency and Bullion Bureau of the PBC. introduced to the participants about detailed arrangement of "The Design Competition On The Beijing 2008 Olympic Numismatic Program". Concerned leaders of the BOCOG also attended the conference. According to information released at the conference, the PBC. will issue commemorative coins for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in succession from 2005 to 2008. The programme consists 40 coins, all of which are expected to be designed under the theme of publicizing the Olympic spirit, propagandizing about China and Beijing. The draft design collection for the
9 general commemorative coins and the 31 precious metal commemorative coins will be open to all circles of society. The appraisal works of the draft design will be authoritative, professional and precise. All of the designing companies, art academies, banknote printing and minting organs, or individuals home and abroad have the equal right to participate this activity, the selection will be carried out in line with the principle of "fair, just, open".
