¡¡The
26th Olympic Summer Games Commemorative Coins
|
The 1996 games were given a
dramatic start when the cauldron was lit by Muhammad Ali. A terrorist
bomb killed
one person and injured 110, but the Atlanta Games are best remembered
for their sporting achievements. A
record-setting 79 nations won medals and 53 won gold. Carl Lewis became
only the fourth person to win the
same individual event four times and the fourth person to earn a ninth
gold medal. Naim S¨¹leymanoglu became
the first weightlifter to win a third gold medal. Michael Johnson
smashed the 200-meter world record to complete
a 200-400 double. The Games of the XXVI Olympiad was attended by 197
countries comprising of 10,320
athletes of which 3,523 athletes are women.
In commemoration of the 26th Olympic Games, the People's Bank of China
issued the 26th Olympic Games
commemorative coins, altogether eight (two are gold and the other
six are silver). They were minted by
Shanghai Mint and exclusively distributed by China Gold Coin Inc..
They all are legal tender of the People's
Republic of China.
The common obverse depicts the title of the PRC, the National Emblem
and the issuing year. The reverses
of the gold coins depict the High Platform Diving and the Gymnasium
respectively and the face value. The
reverses of the six silver coins depict the Table-tennis, Single Bar,
Hand Ball, Taek-Kwan-Do, Shooting,
Yacht respectively and also the face value. |
