The 23rd Olympic Games was attended
by 140 countries comprising of 6,797 competitors of which 1,567 were
women. On the day the Olympic Torch arrived in America, the Soviet
Union boycotted the Games. Baseball and
tennis, which would later become part of the Olympic schedule, were
introduced as demonstration sports in Los
Angeles. The Games were officially opened by President Reagan at the
Opening Ceremony.
In commemoration of the great 23rd Olympic Games, the People's Bank
of China issued the 23rd Summer
Olympic Games commemorative coins, minted by Shanghai Mint and exclusively
distributed by China Gold Coin
Inc..
The common obverse depicts the title of the PRC, the National Emblem,
the issuing year and a stripe depicts
sports practising. The reverses depict respectively the Men's High
Jump and the Women's Volleyball, the face
value and inscription in Chinese "In commemoration of Attending
the 23rd Summer Olympic Games". |
