25th Olympic Summer Games Commemorative Coins

For the first time in 20 years,
every nation with a National Olympic Committee was represented. Men's
basketball
was opened to all professionals, and the U.S. sent a "Dream Team"
that included Magic Johnson, Michael
Jordan and Larry Bird. Belarus Gymnast Vitaly Scherbo won six gold
medals, including a record four in one day.
Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won the 10,000-meter run to become the first
female black African Olympic champion.
Her victory lap with silver medallist Meyer, a white South African,
symbolised hope for the future of the Olympic
Movement.The Games of the XXV Olympiad was attended by 169 countries
comprising of 9,367 athletes of which
2,708 athletes are women.
In commemoration
of the 25th Summer Olympic Games, the People's Bank of China issued
the 25th
Summer Olympic Games commemorative gold and silver coins. Altogether
six coins, one is gold and the
others are silver. All the coins were minted by Shanghai Mint and
exclusively distributed by China Gold
Coin Inc..They are the legal tender of the People's Republic of China.
The common
obverse depict the title of the PRC, the National Emblem and the issuing
year. The reverse of
the gold coin depicts the Basketball and the face value. The reverses
of the silver coins depict respectively
the Sprint, Bicycle, High Jump, Diving, Table-tennis and the face
value. |
