In 1972, the Ministry of Finance of Japan authorised the minting of an Olympic coin featuring an Olympic torch. To this date, Japan is the only country to have featured an Olympic torch on its coins.
The Olympic Winter Games of Sapporo 1972 showcased for the second time an official Olympic coin collection from Japan's Ministry of Finance / Mint Bureau.

Snow Flakes
The obverse of the coin features two snowflakes stylised in the same fashion as the snowflake found on the official logo of Sapporo 72.

Olympic Torch
The reverse of the coin features an Olympic torch with a Japanese legend meaning "Japan" and a Japanese text meaning "100 Yen"
An interesting fact is that for the second time Japan was the first country to feature a design of an Olympic torch on its coins.
