The Asian Games are held for the purpose of developing intercultural knowledge and friendship within Asia. The member countries and regions affiliated to the OCA participate in this multi-sports event.

In this sports festival, held every four years in between the Olympic Games, young people from all over Asia gather together to compete. It is an occasion when strength and skill are tested, and friendships and solidarity are built and deepened.

The Asian Games were established at India's suggestion after the end of World War. The first Games were held in the Indian capital of New Delhi in 1951, with eleven countries participating. The Hiroshima Games(the 12th Asian Games) will mark the second time that Japan has hosted the Games (after Tokyo 1958), and it will be the first time that the Games are held in a non-capital city.

To mark the 12th Asian Games, Japan issued the set of commemorative coins.
