Ancient Chinese people use twelve animals to represent the twelve Early Branches and each animal symbolizes a unique meaning. This tradition became a part of Chinese culture. In ancient times, tools used to count time are very coarse, it is the crow of rooters that remind people the new day's coming.
The People's Bank of China has been issuing commemorative coins of 12 Earthly Branch animals since 1981, the year of the rooster. Two cycles of 12 years came to the end in 2003 and the Year of the Rooster Coin for 2005 will mark the beginning of the third cycle. This set comprises 6 gold coins and 6 silver coins.
