The grottoes of Maiji Mountain are located in Tianshui Gansu Province. Maiji (which means strawstack ) mountain got the name from its strawstack like appearance. The construction of the grottoes of Maiji Mountain was began from the Later Qin Dynasty, through more than 1,500 years, the grottoes now have 194 niches, more than 7,200 pieces of clay sculptures and stone carvings, and over 1,000 square meters of frescos. Most of the statues in the grottoes are goddesses carved in a pose of looking down, the facial expressions are kind and wise; the engraving art is mainly a synthesis of round blade engraving and plane engraving, and a synthetic use of intaglio and rilievi lines. The grottoes are characterized by its profound national feature, strong national consciousness, distinct earthliness, and pronounced spice of people's daily life.
For the purpose of protect this rare cultural heritage, exhibit the style and features of Chinese grottoes art, the People's Bank of China will issue a set of Chinese Grottoes Art (Maiji Mountain) gold and silver commemorative coins. This set comprises 2 gold coins and 1
