Pilgrimage to the west is renowned as a classical work of Chinese and world literature. Wu Chengen, the author of Pilgrimage to the west based his novel on Chinese fables about Monk Xuan Zang went on a pilgrimage to the west for Sutra. Mingled with realities, and wrote with a surrealist style, the novel molded a series of vivid characters, such as religiose Tang Seng (another name of Monk Xuan Zang), a Monkey King with a vast magic powers, lazy and gluttonous Zhu Bajie, naive and introvert Sha Heshang.
The People's Bank of China will issue Chinese Classical Literary Woks-Pilgrimage to the West commemorative colored gold and silver coins in April 2004 (the 2nd set). Designs on the coins will be based on passages of "Tri-battle Against Spirit Of Bones" "Campaign With Ne Zha", "Fight Against Bull Fiend", "The Greatest Sage", and "On The Way To The West". All the designs make a vivid depiction of a Monkey King characterized by bravery, wittiness, optimism, and boldness. This set consists of 5 coins, 1 in gold, 3 in silver.
