Beijing succeed in the bid for 2008 Olympic Games in July
13, 2001. According to international practice, The People’s
Bank of China will start the issuance of Olympic coins for the
Games of the XXIX Olympiad. This tradition begins from the 15th
Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Finland. In more than 50 years
past, Olympic coins have become a bright spot in the international
coin market. The issuance of Olympic coins publicized Olympic
spirit on the one hand, and on the other, it is an important
channel to publicize the traditional culture of the hosting
country.
Affiliated to PBC, CGCI is the only professional corporation
deals in precious metal commemorative coins. The issuance of
coins under the themes of Olympic and sports was start from
1980. Since the Olympic bid in 2001, CGCI has put great passion
and concern into the numismatic program for the 2008 Olympic
Games, and has issued 5 sets of Olympic collectibles in succession.
Ushering the 2008 Olympic Games, PBC plans to issue the first
set of 2008 Olympic coins in 2005. This set will reflect the
Olympic spirit --- “Citius, Altius, Fortius”; reflect the theme
of Beijing Olympic Games --- “New Beijing, New Olympics”; reflect
the concept --- “Green Olympic, High-tech Olympic, People’s
Olympic”; reflect the unique characteristics of China, and Beijing;
reflect the harmonious mix of world civilization, ancient civilization,
